Secret to Beautiful Trans Maps
Okay I have been questioned by several people on how to do the transmaps that I create for various items like my Mistress Royal and Celtic Tribal Collections. So I figured I would provide a simple walk through. This works with Photoshop CS2 but the general idea can most likely be used in any art editing software.
We are going to start with something simple. Go here!
http://www.imvu.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/64002 - This is KimberlyLin’s busty Body Suit With Gloves - DO NOT BUY. Derive from product and while you are on this page, grab the mapping template. You need to learn how to use these.
Now, open the mapping template in Photoshop.
Create a new layer - fill in black. This will make the whole thing transparent. For mapping templates you need to know black hides fabric, white shows fabric and various shades of grey will show like a see through material. We are just going to keep it black and white right now.
Turn off the black layer - it will come into play later.
Create a layer above that - don’t do squat yet. I want you to take time look at this mapping template. If you can learn the read the lines on the template you can learn how to make sure your patterns and seams line up without a break. Oh lookie here - I gave you a little descript of where things are on the mapping template - how nice of me.
Look at the horizontal lines - they are your key in this for lining things up and fine tuning your product.
Okay - back to the empty layer. Select your brush and place it on #ffffff. In other words, solid white. Brushes are going to become your best friend! Learn them well!
Now we do not want just a simple straight line, that is BORING! Everyone does those. So we are going to pick a pretty brush, it is your precious. The one I am using is from a brush I made myself. You can find brushes all over the net or create your own. Look for ones with great lines, curves, points, ect. this will give your outfit some flair. We are going to start over the boobs - since they are the “center piece.”
Make your brush the proper size, don’t worry at this point if the cover the breasts fully - we will fill in the spots later. Now brush once where you want the detail to be. Since mine is a larger brush I am going to use it as a center piece. As you can see in the image - so nifty isn’t it? I thought so
Now if you are using a brush that is just going to cover one breast - don’t pull the duplicate layer trick. It does not line up well. Take your time, create a new layer brush again, transform, flip horizontal and then line it up.
Okay, new layer - create a layer under your brush layer. Rectangular marquee tool - draw a rectangle from one side to the other to cover most of the body now. This can be used as a guide or as the transmap - since we are going with simplicity right now - it will end up being the main part of the trans.
Now fill with white - yeah it covers up a lot of the brush but I will show you have to bring that detail back out later. Why we keep separate layers ^_~.
Now, new layer - I am going to say this a lot. Layers a plenty and they rock! Create it under the block white layer. Pick a default 19 hard round brush and start filling in the bottom of the body - nothing else. You should have something like this so far.
Now, this does not cover your avatars butt. So you have to this now. Select your pen tool. Draw a curved line from the butt to the top of the thigh. Repeat the process on the other side - can’t have her one cheeked now can we? Well we can but we want this in general audience.
Now, turn on the black layer.
Save. Now - throw the trans map into the Previewer - if you do not know how to do this check out some other tutorials before doing this one.
Now look - hrm, not bad so far. From here it is very simple but time consuming. You will want to take various other brushes to add lines and such if you wish. Use your eraser to cut out parts. Ect.
Here is a simple example of what it can look like when you are finished.
Now of course you can do more details. Add in thigh highs, more detail through out the bodice, gloves, arm bands, ect. This is just a quick tutorial to give you a general idea. Hope it helps. Feel free to ask any questions!
P.S. I see someone use the trans here for something I will personally kick your butt. You didn’t make it, you don’t use it. Get it? Got it? Good.

When a layer is on, it has a small eye icon in the box in front of it, when it's off the box is empty. Just click the eye to turn the layer off.
